The greatest gains to be made from the creation of a Digital Single Market lie not in the tech sector itself but in the adoption of advanced digital technologies by the rest of the economy. This process has been named Digital Transformation. Applying the latest digital tools and new business models in all sectors will boost productivity and efficiency, and make companies and public organisations more competitive and entrepreneurial. Digital transformation will bring new business opportunities and will create the new products and services of the future. It will spark a new entrepreneurial action and modernise Europe’s industrial base, which will help create new jobs, many of which don’t even exist today.
European industry is facing a considerable lack of a trained and highly skilled workforce with thousands of unfilled digital jobs available today throughout all industry sectors. At the same time Europe still suffers from high levels of unemployment, especially among young people. This apparent contradiction has been dubbed the skills gap.
That is the reason why the European Commission works closely with Member States and European businesses, with a view to set an ambitious roadmap to accelerate digital transformation and the supply of state-of-the-art eSkills in Europe.
